Where to Look When You Shop for a Wipe Warmer
There are a few important details you need to pay attention to when wipe warmer shopping, and after having tried so many models, we learned where to look before purchasing one.
- Wipe Size & Wipe Capacity – How many wipes can it accommodate? What brand will fit in the unit?
These are some of the most common questions that people ask when searching for a wipe warmer.
Most manufacturers state that they will accommodate any standard wipe size, but what is “standard?”
Many are between 8 to 8.5 inches in length, and they fit in the warmers without a problem. If you’re worried about the size, just check the customer comments to see if other people have been able to fit the brand you use in the warmer.
- The Seal – One of the reasons that wipes dry out so often in these units is because of the poor seal around the lid.
Those with a silicone or rubber seal around the rim help keep the moisture locked inside, which is probably why the Hiccapop Wipe Warmer and the Prince Lionheart Warmies Wipes Warmer are some of the most popular units. They both have one!
- Side Window – Some units make it easy for you to tell when the wipes are getting low since they have a window on the side, which is a handy feature but not a crucial one.
- Light – A few units on our list also function as night lights, which is nice so that you can see what you’re doing in a dark nursery or room. The light isn’t enough to make a huge difference, but it is handy.
What About the Bottle/Wipe Warmer Combo?
Honestly, we weren’t very impressed by the bottle warmer/wipe warmer combo units. The concept is great, but no manufacturer has managed to make a decent model that heats up a bottle quickly and to the right temperature while heating the wipes.
Either the bottle warmer takes forever to heat, or the wipe warmer gets too hot. These units just aren’t reliable, and for the price you pay, it would probably be cheaper (or the same price) to purchase a wipe warmer separately and a bottle warmer separately.
Weigh the Pros and Cons of the Wipe Warmer
If you’ve been on the fence about purchasing one and still haven’t decided, weigh out the pros and the cons to help you determine if it is the right appliance to add to your diapering lineup.
- Pros – Some babies and toddlers are super sensitive to temperature changes, and if you have a little one who screams his or her head off every time a regular wipe touches them, then a wipe warmer can make the diaper change go so much more smoothly.
Babies can be sensitive, and when they are constantly fussy, small changes in their routine can have a huge impact on their mood.
That’s really the main reason to get one and the biggest pro of all.
- Cons – While we do love these handy gadgets and we are here to show you some of the best wipe warmers on the market, they do have their cons.
Some parents find that they dry out the wipes, and since manufacturers use special formulas and ingredients to moisten them, sometimes rehydrating with regular tap water can introduce new bacteria. Many parents rehydrate them anyways, but manufacturers advise against it.
Speaking of bacteria; that is another issue that parents worry about, but it’s more an issue with the wipes themselves. Occasionally brands will recall their products due to bacterial contamination, so you should always check to see whether your current wipes are safe or not.
If you want to avoid this problem in the wipe warmer, just put a few in at a time rather than stuffing it full.
While the cons do seem to outweigh the pros, we still think that it is a great gadget for many parents. Babies certainly appreciate it and won’t complain if you clean their bums with a warm wipe rather than a cold one!
Top 5 Best Wipe Warmers Reviews
In our top five, we felt that the Hiccapop and Munchkin warmers were the best, but read each of our detailed reviews to determine which is the best wipe warmer for your needs and budget.
This wipe warmer has all of the features that we expect from a gadget like this. The rim has a silicon seal that helps lock in moisture and heat, a nightlight that will automatically shut off after 10 minutes, and they claim it can hold any brand of wipes.
While we aren’t sure how many wipes can fit in it, they do say that it will fit a “weeks’ worth.” We’re guessing that it will accommodate about 100 wipes.
We were pleased with the warming temperature, which wasn’t too hot, and that silicone seal helps prevent the heat from escaping. It is designed to heat the wipes from the top, which means that you’ll always have a warm one to pull out and use. The heat doesn’t travel too far down into the lower wipes, however, so if you have a diaper blowout, you might end up with a few cold ones.
Many parents opt for the Munchkin warmer (which we will be discussing later) over this one simply because the Munchkin costs less.
It’s true that this unit is more expensive, but we found it to be more reliable and durable than the Munchkin in the long run.
If you’ve never heard of this one and aren’t sold on the Munchkin or Prince Lionheart, we recommend it!
One of the best ways to cut down your costs when it comes to diapering is by opting for reusable products. We really enjoy the reusable wipes and highly recommend them!
This Prince Lionheart model is specifically designed for cloth wipes. They provide you with four wipes – or “Warmies,” as they call them – when you purchase the warmer.
They include a little sponge pad (they call it a micropore pillow) that rests on the bottom of the wipe warmer to prevent it from burning the wipes, but we found that the warmer was more efficient without it. If you do use it, just know that you’ll need to replace it occasionally, which can add on to the costs.
Four wipes are never enough, and while you can purchase additional Prince Lionheart wipes separately, many opt for the Grovia Cloth Diaper Wipes instead since you get 12 of them. Prince Lionheart only gives you eight, and you pay more.
Overall, we were very impressed by this machine and found it to be the perfect solution for go-green families. Hot towel, anyone?
Munchkin Warm Glow is one of the most popular wipe warmers out there. Not many manufacturers have managed to create a decent product in this category, but Munchkin has, and everyone loves that it is so affordable!
The compartment can fit up to 100 standard size baby wipes, and just like the Hiccapop, it has the handy nightlight.
The seal was great, and the wipes didn’t dry out, which was probably because you are supposed to add in ½ cup of water every time you refill the warmer. They mention this in the instructions, too, but ½ cup seemed like a bit much. We would stick with a ¼ cup and add more as needed. Just add in the wipes and then pour the water over the top of them.
Keep in mind that as a top-heating unit, which means that only the topmost wipes will be warm. Many feel that it is a little bulky, and we would have to agree. At this price range, you shouldn’t expect top-of-the-line performance, but it meets the basic expectations of most parents.
Prince Lionheart has several products on our list, and this is one of their most travel-friendly options. They made it more compact so that you can take it with you on the go. We found it handy for travel since it comes with a car charger, which means you can warm up the wipes while you’re driving!
The wipe capacity is much smaller – 30 wipes maximum – but that is to be expected since it isn’t as large.
The one pitfall of this little device is that it doesn’t keep the wipes warm for very long after you unplug it. Sure, you can arrive at your destination with warm wipes, but you only have about a 20-minute window to use them before they cool off. We were pleased with the convenience but wouldn’t recommend it as you main wipe warmer.
The final unit is from Lil’ Jumbl, and it is one of few units out there that offers you different heat settings. Units with just a single heat setting can end up being too warm or too hot for some parents (and babies), but this one offers you more control.
It is rather large, but since it holds up to 100 wipes, this didn’t bother us too much.
The design was also rather similar to that of the Munchkin, only this one has a smaller window on the side for viewing the wipes, and it doesn’t have a light.
Apart from the temperature customization, we would say that it is just about as reliable as any of the other units in our top five. It’s not too expensive but costs a little more than the Munchkin. It worked great with cloth wipes!
