T-Shirt Buying Guide
Whether you plan to wear it under a dress shirt or just lounging around the house, nothing is worse than an ill-fitting top. To avoid that, keep these areas in mind before you buy.
This is an obvious area and the first place to start regardless of the neck style. It goes without saying that what one company says is a Large may be a Medium in another brand, and that’s before you put them in the washer for the first time. While plenty of the picks on our best white t-shirt are preshrunk, we are going to talk about size in regards to the style.
For Men, when you hear the word “Athletic Cut” that means it is going to be tight. In other words, buy a size larger if you like the shirt but don’t want it too snug. If it is worn under another shirt, you may actually want to buy a smaller size so that it is easier to tuck in and not loose around the neck. The same rules apply to Women’s T-shirts as they come in different cuts as well from loose to form fitting tees.
Material and Thickness
All the t-shirts on our list are made from cotton, and that’s a good thing. Most will be blended with a different type of material, however, so you need to think about allergies. Polyester is common and safe for most, but some of the other fabrics used could irritate the skin so always check the materials out beforehand. The blend the company uses will affect the shrinkage and life of your t-shirt as well.
Do you like a soft, thin t-shirt that looks like you’ve had it for a decade? Well, you can buy them outright and don’t need to wait for them to age if you roll with thin cotton and certain styles. While that may be stylish, they usually don’t last as long as a thicker t-shirt. Think about where you plan to wear the shirt before writing off thicker t-shirts which are getting harder to find.
There are a half-dozen different neckline styles in the t-shirt world. That includes those tie-up Pirate themed shirts, as those don’t quite fit the bill as a true tee. For our purposes, we chose two main styles with Crew and V-Neck.
Crew Neck shirts fit close at the neck and are the most common style on planet earth. V-Neck’s dip down in the front and “Deep” V-Necks are cut lower than their brethren. Other styles to keep an eye out for include the Scoop neck which can also be quite deep.
This one may come down to your gender and how well you handle washing clothes. Women are generally more careful with their clothing when it hits the washer while many men have fallen victim to the horrors of bleach or a new red shirt in with the whites. While white t-shirts aren’t going to fade onto other garments, they can shrink.
If you want the t-shirt to stay the same size it was when it arrived, make sure it has been preshrunk. That said, it can still shrink in some cases, but it won’t go from a Large to a Small on high heat. Most t-shirts on our list are easy to care for, but some of them do require a bit more tenderness when you toss them in the dryer.
Top 5 Best White T-Shirts Reviews
Our top choice is for Men and comes from Next Level, a company responsible for some of the best-selling plain t-shirts around. This one is a Sueded V-Neck style t-shirt which is “fitted” and made from premium materials. That means it will be tighter than usual and is best suited for those that enjoy tight shirts that bring folks to the gun show.
The sleeve length is actually average on this one, so your muscles will show, but not too much. The same can be said for the neckline. This one has the classic V-Neck style and is not deep cut. It is made from a blend of 60% cotton and 40% polyester with a pull on closure but is not tagless, unfortunately. It’s a minor gripe for such a fine t-shirt, but a gripe nonetheless considering it is now standard with Hanes and others.
Obviously, the Next Level Premium T-Shirt is White but is also available in Natural which is an Off-White color. There are 19 other colors available as well in case you want to pick up more than a plain White tee.
As mentioned, Next Level knows a few things about putting together a solid t-shirt that’s not going to fray or go holey after a few washings. The Men’s Tri-Blend Crew Tee fits that bill as it’s an amazing shirt that walks the fine line between thin and think. In a nutshell, it isn’t heavy enough to weight you down, but just thick enough so that you can’t see through it either.
This shirt only has a trace amount of cotton in its construction as it’s listed as being 100% polyester with 50% poly, 25% combed ring-spun cotton, and 25% rayon jersey. It’s not going to shrink up due to a hot roll in the dryer, and it’s been pre-washed to help prevent shrinkage, as well. While soft and comfortable, it is not cotton and you will be able to tell the difference if you are used to simple cotton tees.
Like the rest of the tops on our list, this one is available in multiple colors besides White. If you want to stick to that hue but mix it up, you can opt for Vintage White or Heather White as well.
And now for something a little more lightweight. Whereas our top two choices weighed in at over 4 ounces, the Canvas Triblend V-Neck tee clocks in at only 3.8 ounces. It’s an airy shirt with a blend of Rayon, Cotton, and Polyester with the latter making up the largest part of the t-shirt.
There is only 25% cotton in this V-Neck, but it has been combed and ringspun to remove any imperfections and is 40 singles. That means they used 40 gauge yarn in its construction. Other features to note on this tee include a side seam and the fact it has what’s referred to as a “retail” fit. That means normal, so it’s should fit just right and not too tight in the chest or arms.
While were fans of the Bella Canvas V-Neck, we’d be remiss if we did not mention the fact that it is a “tagged” shirt. Again, it’s not a deal-breaker, but something to keep in mind if tags in the neckline bother you. Some are far easier to remove than others.
Our first choice for ladies comes from the most famous t-shirt maker on our best white t-shirt list. That would be Hanes, and this is their Sport Cool DRI performance tee for Women. It is another t-shirt sans the cotton with no blending involved as it is made from 100% polyester.
This is a simple crew neck t-shirt, and it’s tagless like all of the newer tees from Hanes. The sleeves are shorter than normal, and the shirt has the distinction of sporting a 50+ UPF rating. That’s a sunscreen rating for clothing, something plenty of consumers are unaware of. It measures how much sun gets “through” your shirt and onto your skin, so the higher the rating, the better.
Gildan is another name Americans will be very familiar with as they have been producing tees for ages. More often than not, you will find their tag in the backs of printed shirts featuring bands, companies and even funny photos of cats. This shirt is dubbed the Gildan Men’s Heavy Cotton T-Shirt, and it is one of the heavier shirts to make the cut at 5.3 ounces.
While it won’t be as light as a vintage style tee, this one is built to last. The White t-shirt is made from 100% cotton or 50/50 with Polyester depending on which way the wind blows. While that may be concerning, it is common as t-shirts are made at different factories and come from different parts of the world. Regardless of the material, it will be preshrunk when it arrives at your doorstep. These shirts are also sized up to a 5XL, which is a nice bonus for those looking for a larger t-shirt.
