How to Choose The Vacuum for Sucking up Pet Hair

You can’t just trust any old vacuum out there to get the job done, so here are a few things you need to take into consideration to choose the best vacuum for pet hair removal.

  • Surface – Do you need a vacuum for cleaning a hardwood floor or vinyl flooring or will you be using it on carpeting?

If you have a mixture of both in your home, then be sure to opt for a vacuum that has both settings available on the control panel: one for hard floor and one for carpet.

  • Handheld or Upright – Are you in need of a handheld vacuum to remove pet hair from your furniture and the car seats or do you need something large that can handle the entire house?

Pet hair gets everywhere, and while the larger units are great at removing the majority of the mess, we would still recommend having a little handheld unit in your cleaning closet to help you deep clean smaller areas.

  • Cordless or Corded – Since there are corded and cordless versions of both the upright and the handheld vacuum cleaners, you’ll need to decide which is better for your cleaning needs.

Cordless units are lighter and can travel with you anywhere, but the suction power dies as the battery wears down.

Corded units are usually heavier, and you are limited to the length that the cord can reach, but the suction power is superb, and they will offer superior pet hair removal from carpeting than the cordless vacuums.

  • Weight – We know that some vacuums are ridiculously heavy, which is why we included the weight of each unit in our table.

Our goal is to simplify your search, and your goal is to be able to lift the vacuum where the pet hair resides!

Don’t Forget About the Extras

Once you have decided on the main type of vacuum that you would like, it’s time to hone in on the small details so that you are sure to purchase the right one.

Here are a few extra features and details you should keep in mind while shopping.

  • Filters – A good filter will help trap all of the dust particles and allergens that are floating around your flooring, pet dander included.

Some vacuums may be great at removing pet hair, but if you happen to be allergic and need something that will help keep the air cleaner for you to breathe, then look for one with a HEPA filter and allergen-sealing technology like the Shark Navigator Lift-Away Vacuum.

  • Attachments – When you’re removing pet hair from carpet and upholstery, the brush attachment comes in quite handy since it can help you work up the hair for the vacuum to suck it into the canister or bag.

For cleaning in corners and tight spaces, make sure that it comes with a narrow crevice tool and remember that rubber is your best friend in the fight against pet hair. It is naturally sticky and acts like pet hair glue.

Some brands sell special pet hair attachments separately, so if the vacuum you like doesn’t come with the accessories you need, be sure to check and see if offer any specialty attachments!

  • Cord Length – Knowing the cord length before you purchase is helpful because you can determine whether or not you’ll need an extension cord to help you reach all areas of your home or business.
  • Cleaning Path Width – How wide of a path will the vacuum clean in one swipe? A wider cleaning path means you will get the job done faster, but wider isn’t always better.

It’s tough to reach into narrow spaces and under furniture with bulkier machines, so keep this in mind as you shop.

Top 5 Best Vacuum for Pet Hair Reviews

1. Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional Vacuum

This vacuum pretty much does everything: you can use it on hard floors, on carpeting, you can lift it away from the main unit and use it to clean stairs or higher areas, making it one of the most versatile vacuums on our list.

The attachments it includes make it ideal for pet hair removal.

First, we have the dust away attachment for use on hard floors. The suction power is excellent, and since there is a microfiber pad on the bottom, you’ll pick up any larger hairballs or other debris as you pass.

Shark also provides you with their Pet Power Brush when you purchase this vacuum so you can clean stairs and upholstery with ease.

We like that it is bagless (which means you won’t have to purchase replacement bags), and that the debris container is large: 6 gallons! There is also a HEPA filter, so any of you who suffer from allergies will suffer just a bit less thanks to this little guy.

It is quite an amazing vacuum for the price range. If your home has a mixture of flooring surfaces and stairs, then you will find this to be the best vacuum for pet hair removal for your home.

2. Dyson V6 Animal Vacuum

Do you prefer something a little lighter and cord-free? If so, then Dyson has something that you will like.

Their V6 Animal Cordless Vacuum is a hit for pet owners who need a lightweight unit that isn’t limited by cords.

Dyson increased the brush power by 75% compared to their original V6 model; this, along with 20 minutes of continuous suction, allows you to deep clean carpets and lift away pet hair without a hassle.

One of our favorite things about it is the motorized pet hair tool: it helps lift the hairs out of upholstery, car seats, and any other fabric surfaces that hair clings to.

While this is a very lightweight and convenient vacuum, you have to remember that it does have its limitations.

The canister will need to be emptied more frequently since it is small and you’ll only be able to use it for short periods at a time since the battery will run out of juice.

Are these deal breakers? No, but you should keep them in mind if you’re interested in purchasing one.

3. Shark Rocket TruePet Ultra-Light Upright

Shark has another great pet hair vacuum on our list: the TruePet.

This unit is much lighter than the Lift-Away Professional, and we like how easy it is to maneuver: the head swivels, making it easier to go around corners and reach far under furniture without having to get down on your hands and knees. The LED lights are another handy feature, allowing you to see in darker areas.

So does it remove the pet hair?

It does, and both the TruePet Mini Motorized Brush and microfiber pads help you pick everything up, but due to the small canister, you will have to empty frequently. It’s also annoying that the vacuum doesn’t stand on its own, so you’ll have to lean it on something. Remember that it’s corded and not cordless.

It’s a decent option, but we still liked the Shark Lift-Away Professional better.

4. Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Handheld Vacuum

Regardless of what main vacuum you choose, we would still recommend getting this little handheld vacuum if you have more serious pet hair issues.

The combination of the rubber nozzle on the head and the suction power is like a moth to a flame: the hairs will gravitate into the vacuum and away from your furniture!

We were bummed that the cord is so short (only 16 feet) and obviously with a such a small canister, you’ll need to empty it frequently; this is to be expected, however, due to its size.

It is a small investment with big results. We can see this being very useful for businesses or pet shelters!

5. Bissell PowerEdge Pet Hard Floor Vacuum

Our final review is of the Bissell PowerEdge, which is probably one of the most unique choices on our list.

The V-shaped head allows this vacuum to pick up the hair from corners with ease, but it also has another function: that V-shape also directs debris and hair into the central suction path.

Not many vacuums can handle larger debris very well (think of pet food or chunks of dirt that your furry friend left everywhere), but this vacuum can.

The bottom of the head is also equipped with rubber feet, which as we mentioned earlier, is like pet hair glue!

The only reason that this isn’t our top pick is that it is only for use on hard flooring: if you have carpet, then you shouldn’t buy this.

If you have hard flooring only, then get one!
