Tips to Help You Find a Great Toy for a 9-Month-Old

At 9-months, they aren’t quite ready to cut a rug, but most children are starting to test their legs. That means their choice of toys will change as they become more active and curious about the world around them.

Supervised Toys?

When children are still in the baby stage, you can sometimes get away with putting them in the crib with a blankie or soft toy that will keep them entertained for hours. When they get a little older and start nearing the 1-year mark, they can demand more attention during playtime, which means you may want to consider the type of toy you buy.

All of the picks on our best toys for 9-month-old baby list are appropriate for said age range. That said, some are the type that you may not want to leave your child unattended with for extended periods. Others are built specially for solo play however like highchair toys or toys that can attach to strollers or cribs.

BPA & Materials

If you’re looking anything for babies these days, you are going to come across the term BPA-free. In a nutshell, BPA is a chemical used in plastics that are commonly found in toys along with food products including bottles, cups, and plates. While the jury is still out on just how harmful these can be compared to their non-BPA counterparts, it is something to consider and look into if you are concerned about what goes into your child’s mouth. Toys often do just that.

Other common types of materials used in baby toys include terry cloth, rubber and different types of fabrics which are dyed more often than not. Again, if it is anything your child may stick in their mouth, make sure it’s safe to go there or the company lists what the product is made of. On that note, just because it’s “Made in China” doesn’t mean it’s bad, just pay attention to the materials used in the construction.

Babies are messy; this is a fact. Whether it is a never-ending puddle of drool, dirty diapers or bibs caked in food, cleanup is something you always need to be prepared for. That goes double when it comes to baby toys, especially ones they have grown fond of as those tend to get dirtier than the rest. Needless to say, you can’t just chuck plastic in the washing machine.

Most baby toys can be simply wiped down if they are made of plastic, but cloth toys or plushies are something to pay close attention to. If a toy requires special care, you may be better off going a different route, especially if you are a single parent or one that’s short on time. Unfortunately, when buying online tag information can be difficult to come by, so don’t be afraid to email a manufacturer if they don’t list care instructions online.

Top 5 Best Toys for 9-Month-Old Reviews

1. Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes Toy

If your child is the type that appreciates musical toys that get your attention, you may have found their new best friend. The Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes toy is musical and can keep your baby entertained with 7 sweet melodies. You will not get Twinkle Twinkle Little Star however as this toy is a bit more classy.

The seven tunes included are all classical choices from masters like Mozart, Vivaldi, and Chopin. There is a full listing of tracks available on the company’s site, but our personal favorites were Nocturne No. 6, 1st movement by Mozart and the 1st and 3rd movements from Vivaldi in Four Seasons, Summer. There is no volume dial, but you can choose between low or high volumes.

From the flashing lights that move across the screen with the music to the cute caterpillar handle, Take Along Tunes hits all the right notes  the cute department. It’s BPA-free and runs off of AA batteries which are included in the box. You may want to have a backup pair on hand however or risk the wrath of your child when the music stops.

2. Fisher Price Rock-A-Stack Toy

If you are old enough to read this, you have no doubt seen a version of this popular baby toy in your lifetime. The second option on our list of the best toys for 9-month-old children is the Fisher-Price Rock-a-Stack, which is a whole lot more fun than all those hyphens imply. It may look simple, but do not let that colorful style fool you.

This classic stacking toy is great to help build coordination and keep your baby busy for hours on end. There are four plastic loops that that can place and remove from the rocking platform with an extra bonus on top. The top ring is actually see-through with moving balls inside that makes sounds. Don’t be surprised if this quickly becomes your child’s favorite ring when they aren’t busy batting the toy around.

On the downside, while not 100% confirmed our research leads us to believe this may contain BPA. There was no concrete information either way, but FP has several products that aren’t BPA-free, and this looks to be one of them as there’s nothing on the box telling us otherwise. That doesn’t mean it isn’t totally safe but is something parents may want to consider going forward.

3. VTech Busy Learners Activity Cube

Some children are content to sit around and slap at a spinning ball or stare into the big plush eyes of their favorite toy. Other children need  a baby toy with a few more bells & whistles, which is where the Busy Learners Activity Cube comes into play.

VTech’s first entry onto our list is built for toddlers that need to stay busy. This cube will do the trick as it sports activities on five sides. There are buttons that light up which help introduce your child to letters, numbers, and shapes. It can play up to 25 different melodies as well as you child flips levers, spins blocks and presses the multitude of buttons on the cube. It is not something they will tire of quickly.

This baby toy is rated for children 6-months old through 3-years old and is perfect for the 9-month age range when those motor skills are starting to sharpen up. It runs off of two AAA batteries with an auto-shut off feature to save on juice and is made from BPA-free materials.

4. Fisher-Price Learn with Me Zebra Walker

You can’t have a baby list without including several products from Fisher Price. Our second toy from the company isn’t quite as classic as our first choice, but just as fun nonetheless. It has a variety of activities to engage your child during playtime but also has the perk of helping them learn how to walk when they are ready and steady.

This two-in-one toy offers babies two ways to play –standing or sitting. When sitting, they can spin, flip and twist things on the animal’s paws. The center lights up and plays music while helping to teach your child numbers and letters. They can also play a little peek-a-boo, because what baby doesn’t love that game? When it comes time to start walking, this one will help them along with four steady, sturdy wheels and wide base.

Generally, we would leave a walking toy off our list as the age when children start to transition can be much later than 9-months of age. This toy was an exception to the rule as there is plenty to keep your baby entertained sitting down until they are ready to roll.

5. Infantino Grow-with-me Activity Set & Ball Pit

Once upon a time, you had to drag you entire family to a pizza place or fast food joint to let them enjoy the pleasures of a ball pit. Well, not anymore and you can leave those germs behind as well. Even 9-month old children can get in on the fun with the Infantino Grow-with-me Activity Gym and Ball Pit which offers up more activities than any other toy on our list.

Where to start with this one. We have a ball pit complete with 40 colorful plastic balls and mesh walls that can be easily added or removed. When not in ball pit mode, it transforms into a nice play mat complete with a mobile over the top when baby just wants to lay back and relax or nap. Four animals hang from the top and can be linked together while the balls are stored in the head of the toy turtle when not in use.

This is a baby toy that puts the rest to shame when it comes to the sheer amount of joy it can offer although it is not without a few drawbacks. You can’t wash it, so you’ll need to master the art of spot cleaning, and it doesn’t make any type of real noise or music compared to other play mats that play melodies and lullabies.
