How to Choose
What we may consider to be the best packing cubes may not be so great for you, so here are a few things to keep in mind so that you choose the right ones based on your packing style and travel needs.
- Shape & Structure – Most cubes are structured with rigid sides that help them keep their shape, but not all bags are designed like this. Some are more like sacks and allow you to compress your clothes by releasing the excess air in the back – numbers 11 and 12, for example.
We also included a unique toiletry bag for those of you who would also need something to help keep all of your shampoo, toothpaste, shaving items, etc. in order (number 9).
Many brands also offer a wide variety of cube shapes, so if the ones we’ve chosen aren’t the right match, be sure to check out the other options that the brand makes!
- Size – Most sets come with cubes of different sizes, but others – such as the Dot&Dot Medium Packing Cubes – give you 4 cubes of the same size in a set. They do offer different sets, which we will be looking at more in detail below, but we thought it would be useful to remind you so that you don’t accidentally end up choosing something that you weren’t expecting!
- Material – Nylon and Rip-Stop nylon are the most common packing cube materials, along with mesh panels that allow airflow to help prevent your clothes from having a dingy smell. It also allows you to see what is inside the cube so you won’t have to open it.
Be sure to check out construction quality, while you’re at it. Look for sturdy seams, especially if you tend to over-pack your cubes, so that they won’t burst open or loosen with regular use.
- Hardware – In addition to the material, we also encourage you to check out the hardware on the cube: the zippers.
We like big, heavy-duty zippers – preferably self-repairing – since zippers are usually one of the first things to go on a low-quality bag.
Expect to spend anywhere from $20-$30 if you want a decent set. Anything less than that and you’re probably just wasting your money in the long run.
While standard luggage and suitcases will fit packing cubes just fine, backpacks have a bit less space for them inside the main compartment.
You might opt for something flat if you have a backpack: such as the Eagle Creek Pack-It Specter Compression Cube Set since they will compress and they weigh less.
If you’re worried about wrinkles, make sure you get a sturdy set of cubes with rigid sides that can keep their shape and prevent the weight of other items from wrinkling your clothing.
Top 4 Best Packing Cubes Reviews
Travelers who have tried other brands of packing cubes tend to favor Shacke Pak products, and once we used them, we understood why: they’ve got great zippers, solid construction and the bag is made out of very durable material.
One of the first things you’ll notice is the unique “X” design on the top.
No, X doesn’t mark the spot in this case, but it does provide plenty of reinforcement on the lid in order to hold your clothes firmly in place once they are packed. This “X” is also reinforced with double stitching to prevent it from ripping or tearing away from the mesh or the rest of the bag: a sure sign of quality!
They’ve also used YKK zippers – which is a brand that is known for its quality and durability.
Travelers love the fact that you get four quality cubes in this set and they offer plenty of space for your items thanks to the 4-inch depth.
A great purchase for any traveler who wants a reliable set of packing cubes! You’ll love the laundry bag, too.
A big competitor with Shacke Pak is eBags. Both excellent packing cubes and both worth the purchase. Shacke Pak is by far the most popular choice of the two probably since eBags only gives you three cubes instead of four, but the quality is still excellent.
Guess who also uses YKK zippers on their cubes? Yep, eBags. At least we know that they’re durable.
These bags are slightly shallower at just 3 inches deep. They’re made from a sturdy TechLite Diamond nylon material along with mesh panels and a webbing handle that makes it easy for you to move the cubes.
These are definitely a great alternative to the Shacke Pak cubes and even though you pay the same price and get one less cube, eBags backs up their product with a lifetime guarantee. That’s pretty good!
Yet again we find the YKK zippers on the Bagail cubes. A popular choice for manufacturers!
This set is slightly lower in cost than the Shacke Pak cubes but you still get four cubes and they are all 4 inches deep. A great alternative if you want to save a few more bucks!
Nylon body, mesh panels on top, webbing handle: as you can see, packing cubes are all pretty similar so it comes down to the construction quality.
These deserve a spot on our top four and if the other two options didn’t meet your needs, we’d recommend these to you.
Dot&Dot makes plenty of great travel accessories, and we really liked their packing cubes, too.
These come in a set of four cubes that are all the same size, which is different from the other cubes that come in sets with different sizes included. Choose from large, medium, slim and small, based on the items you pack and the size.
These are a bit more expensive than the other options but in terms of construction, durability and hardware, we feel they’re worth it.
If you need four cubes that are all the same size, this is definitely the set for you!
