When searching for quality lightweight luggage, there are a few things you should take into consideration before you choose.
- How Will You Be Travelling to and From Your Destination? – This question is especially important since you don’t want to carry around heavy luggage when you have to make multiple stops before reaching your destination!
- Weight – The lighter the luggage the better as it makes for easy carrying from place to place.
- Wheels – Should you go for a bag with two wheels or four? Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Bags with two wheels will roll forward or backward (as opposed to multiple directions) and the fact that they are fixed onto the luggage makes them a little more sturdy than the protruding wheels of a swivel bag.
Bags with four wheels make maneuvering your way through busy crowds much easier since the wheels swivel a full 360 degrees.
These wheels are usually less sturdy and can snap off if the bag is treated roughly.
Material – Hard Shell vs Soft Shell Luggage
You may find it rather difficult to decide between soft shell luggage and hard shell luggage, so weigh out the pros and cons of each one in order to decide which will work best for your travel needs.
- Soft Shell – Soft shell luggage is usually made of a sturdy nylon fabric. It is not necessarily lighter in weight than hard shell bags (if you plan to use a backpack, then it will definitely be lighter) and it is more flexible when it comes to fitting in oddly shaped items in your bag.
On the downside, though, soft shell luggage may not provide as much protection as hard shell luggage, especially if you consider things such as rain and ripping.
- Hard Shell – This can be the best lightweight luggage in some cases, but not always.
Usually made of polycarbonate or ABS, they are waterproof, they protect the contents of your bag better, but you can’t fit them into overhead bins easily and you are limited as to the amount of items you can pack inside.
On the downside though, hard shell luggage tends to scruff or scratch easily. It is also not as flexible as soft shell luggage.

With this TravelCross Columbia Luggage, you get three pieces of luggage: a 20-inch suitcase, a 24-inch suitcase and a 28-inch suitcase. The 24-inch and the 28-inch bags are both expandable, which means that you get to enjoy extra space for carrying items. This set of luggage boasts of multi-directional spinner wheels which make it easy to maneuver in crowded areas.
They’re made of sturdy ABS and have reinforced protection on the corners that help protect the bag from all of the tough hits it will take throughout the journey (we all know how bags are loaded into airplanes!). It also has a TSA-approved lock to keep your items safe and secure as you travel.
It is an affordable set of decent quality, and definitely a great choice if you travel often
The Delsey Luggage Helium Aero Expandable Spinner Trolley is made from 100% polycarbonate. This particular material is quite durable and lightweight, and we like that it is expandable up to two full inches when you have a few extra things you need to fit in.
The four double spinner wheels are quite and make it easy to slither your way through the crowds swiftly and silently.
Inside, there are two compartments with tie-down straps and a zipper divider, and it is available in different sizes. The carry-on size will fit in most overhead bins, which is nice considering that it is a hard shell bag.
While it is more expensive than some of the other bags, it is definitely worth the purchase if you’re looking for something reliable and durable (especially if you travel often).
The Kenneth Cole Reaction Out of Bounds 4-wheel suitcase is perfect for those of you shopping on a budget.
It is made from durable ABS and has four spinner wheels that make it easy to maneuver just about anywhere.
Inside you have a zippered pocket on one side and straps to keep your items securely in place, along with a size zippered pocket for toiletries or other small personal items.
The wheels aren’t as good as the Desley bag we just looked at and the handle isn’t as comfortable, but overall, it is a great lightweight option if you’re looking for an affordable hard shell bag.
This one is not expandable.
The Merax Travehouse Luggage 3-Piece Expandable spinner set is another great budget-friendly option for those of you in need of lightweight hard shell bags.
It comes with a 20-inch bag, a 24-inch bag and a 28-inch, all of which are made from durable ABS, has four swivel wheels and they have recently updated the handle (apparently it had some functional issues).
Compared to the other bags, we noticed that this one doesn’t have any reinforcement on the corners, and with this type of bag, that is where cracks happen the most. It doesn’t seem to be as durable as some of the other pieces, but when you’re getting three pieces of luggage for this price, it’s not a surprise.
This is probably worth the purchase if you travel infrequently and you won’t have any international flights.
