Choosing Flip-Flops – Advanced Tips
There is so much more to choosing a pair of flip-flops than looking at the color and price. If you’re going to make your purchase worthwhile, there are a few deeper points to take into consideration so that you avoid wasting money.
- Footbed Shape – Whether you wear them for just a few hours or all day long, you want to feel comfortable while you walk. Generally, the following conclusion is accurate:
Flat – Least Comfortable.
Curved – Most Comfortable.
A flat footbed offers no support, and for most users, it is the least comfortable option. Sure, we have some great flat flip-flops on our list regarding quality, but comfort is a completely different story.
A curved footbed that conforms to your foot and offers you arch support is usually the best option, which is exactly why they take up the majority of our list.
- Footbed Material – The footbed material should also be soft. Usually EVA is the best midsole option since it is soft enough to conform to your foot as you walk but not so soft that it will wear down quickly.
Rubber, EVA or PU (polyurethane) are the materials used on the sole, with rubber being the most durable.
A cushioned footbed like that of the Nike Comfort Thong is perfect for anyone who wants to wear flip-flops around the house from dawn to dusk. They’re super squishy and super comfortable!
The Straps Should Be Comfortable, Too
Thin straps are usually the ones that rub and give you blisters while wider straps conform to the top of your feet better and won’t slip off as easily.
Strap materials vary from flip-flop to flip-flop, and you might see real and synthetic leather, nylon webbing, mesh, EVA or rubber.
Leather gives you a clean, casual look and we would recommend it if you’re meeting up with friends, running errands or if you’re headed to dinner after a long day at the beach.
Rubber, mesh and EVA tend to be a little less formal and are great when you’re at home, going from locker room to beach front or at the pool.
Look for smooth edges that won’t cut or dig into your skin and be careful with jewels or decorations that can scratch your feet as you walk.
How Will You Use Them?
Another thing to keep in mind as you are shopping is how you’ll be using the flip-flops.
Do you want to use them for some biking around the campground or do you need to hike to a secret beach location with a bit of rough terrain?
If so, you need to make sure that they have good traction on the bottom (preferably rubber soles since it is sticky and adheres to surfaces better) and wide straps.Reef Fanning Sandal is a great option for guys who need this type of sandal, and the women’s version is equally as good.
Top 5 Best Flip Flops Reviews
Clarks understands what many people are looking for in a flip-flop, and that’s why their Breeze Seas are some of the best flip flops out there for women.
The straps are made with synthetic material, and we like that they are wide (no digging into the top of your foot). On the side, there’s a Velcro strap so you can tighten or loosen it and we loved the fact that the footbed follows the natural curvature of the foot.
They used TPR on the sole (thermoplastic rubber), which gives you traction and durability, along with a softer EVA midsole with a stripe of color on the side that matches the straps.
If you doubt that spending this much on a pair of flip-flops is worth it, we can assure you that it absolutely is. These are well made and will last a few seasons if you take good care of them.
Wear them with jeans, wear them to the Tiki hut at the beach or wear them with a skirt when you’re running errands. These versatile flip-flops come in plenty of different colors, and you’ll love how they feel on your feet no matter what you’re doing.
Moving on to a more athletic pair of flip-flops for men, we have the Reef Fanning Sandals that we mentioned earlier in our guide. While Reef classifies them as “sandals,” they are also flip-flops since the strap falls between the big toe and the index toe.
The synthetic nubuck uppers are durable, and the jersey liner they used on the straps feels soft against your feet. Pair this with a compression molded EVA footbed and a heel airbag to give you a bit of shock absorption, and you have the ultimate mixture of comfort and durability.
The traction on these flip-flops is also great thanks to the herringbone pattern on the rubber soles, and the arch support is awesome. You can wear these on dry land, along the shoreline, through creek beds or at the pool since the materials are designed to handle the water.
Perhaps some of the best flip-flops out there for beer fans, these even feature a handy bottle opener on the bottom of the sole. They’re the ultimate outdoor adventure flip-flops!
Ladies who are looking for something simple, stylish and colorful will like the Eezay Dots Sandals (er – flip-flops) from Adidas.
The dots on these flip-flops aren’t part of the décor; they’re on the footbed and act as little masseuses as you walk. The raised beads on the footbed lightly massage your feet as you walk, making them much more comfortable than the Havaianas on our list (they have a regular flat footbed).
We liked that the strap was lightly cushioned and the fact that the outsole was made of rubber, but we wouldn’t recommend them for heavy use. If you need something to slip on at home when you get out of the shower or if you’re at the pool and heading to the locker room, these are great. If you wear them all day, every day, they will wear out quickly.
While they may not be the most comfortable option on the list (the flat footbed causes them to lose some points), they’re still well made and will last much longer than the $5 grocery store find you almost picked up in the checkout line.
Crocs had to be on the list! They’re great for both men and women, and they have colors for everyone.
They feature Crocs’ Original CrosliteTM foam cushioning with TPU straps and a white midsole to add a little contrast.
While this may be a super lightweight shoe that can’t handle the type of terrain that the Reef Fannings can, the soles still have good tread and provide you with grip when you’re walking on slippery surfaces. They’re also extremely comfortable to wear since the contour matches that of your foot and the post that sits in between your toes is rounded. No rubbing!
True, you can’t expect these to do much for you if you’re scrambling up rocks or using them on rough terrain, but for use at home or the pool, they’ll feel like a natural part of your foot as soon as you slip them on.
Oakley has a comfortable pair of sporty flip-flops for guys who want something stylish and durable to put on their feet.
The carbon rubber used on the outsole is extremely durable, and the tread pattern provides you with excellent traction. The EVA midsole offers you cushioning and comfort and great arch support, too.
We liked the breathable mesh material used in the lining of the straps and found them comfortable to wear for long periods due to it; especially in hot weather.
The only complaint we have is regarding the amount of noise these make as you walk! The fact that they are so comfortable caused us to excuse the noise factor, but it is something to keep in mind as you compare flip-flops.
If you’re only wearing flip-flops for a short portion of the day, then we can understand why you would opt for the cheapest pair.
While we do agree with you on that one, there are still plenty out there who want flip-flops to wear all day, every day, and these need to last.
If you’re looking for something to wear around the house, the beach or at the pool, then Havaianas is one of the top brands. The design and profile are simple, but the construction is superb.
For something a little dressier, Clarks Breeze Sea Flip-Flop takes home the gold in women’s flip-flop category, and the Skechers Bosnia Flip-Flop is a huge hit for guys who want something stylish yet casual to wear.
